Labor Board Digitization Project:

Revolutionizing Amazon’s Workforce Management

Project Overview

The Labor Board project aimed to modernize and streamline Amazon’s labor management process in delivery stations. The existing system was highly manual, time-consuming, and prone to errors. This initiative sought to replace the physical whiteboard system with a digital solution, integrating multiple data sources to facilitate efficient associate assignment and tracking.

Challenges with the Legacy System

  • Manual Magnet Management: Physical magnets for each associate, containing personal information, pictures, and barcodes, required constant manual manipulation.
  • Multiple System Dependencies: Information needed for decision-making was scattered across various systems, making the process cumbersome.
  • Time-Intensive Process: Managers spent significant time moving magnets and scanning barcodes, reducing operational efficiency.
  • Error Prone: Manual handling increased the risk of misplacement or incorrect assignments.

Digital Solution Development

Integrated Data Platform

  • Developed a centralized system pulling data from:
    • Associate scheduling system (SSPOT)
    • Training and certification database (PRM)
    • Pre-Shift Planner for daily process path requirements

User-Friendly Interface

  • Created an intuitive drag-and-drop interface within the Staffing Command Center (SCC)
  • Enabled managers to easily view and adjust recommended allocations

Real-Time Updates

  • Integrated with MyTime for up-to-date clock-in information
  • Synchronized with FCLM (Fulfillment Center Labor Management) for immediate labor tracking updates

Automated Assignment Recommendations

  • Implemented algorithms to suggest optimal associate placements based on:
    • Job rotation requirements
    • Associate training and certifications
    • Current shift plans and staffing needs

Visual Display System

  • Designed a system to broadcast finalized assignments onto TV screens within the delivery station
  • Organized associate assignments alphabetically for easy reference

Key Features and Benefits

Time Savings

  • Eliminated the need for manual whiteboard updates
  • Reduced start-of-shift preparation time
  • Improved fast start time by approximately 1 minute per station

Enhanced Visibility

  • Provided real-time insights into:
    • Number of associates clocked in
    • Current labor tracking status
    • Unassigned associates

Improved Accuracy

  • Reduced errors associated with manual data entry and magnet placement
  • Ensured up-to-date information on associate skills and availability

Flexibility and Adaptability

  • Allowed for quick adjustments to staffing in response to real-time needs
  • Facilitated easier management of late arrivals and unexpected absences

Privacy and Security

  • Enhanced data protection by eliminating physical magnets with personal information
  • Implemented role-based access controls for sensitive data

Implementation and Rollout

  • Piloted in North America and UKIE regions
  • Planned expansion to all NA stations by Peak 2024
  • Scheduled rollout in UKIE starting January 2025

Future Enhancements

  • Integration with predictive analytics for proactive staffing adjustments
  • Mobile app development for on-the-go management
  • Advanced reporting features for long-term workforce planning
